Prozac Nation by Elizabeth Wurtzel
The phrase "achingly honest" is over-used. But it applies here. From someone that has succumned to the drug after various bouts of depression, she describes my life extremely well. She comes across as somewhat attention-seeking, but to a pretty large extent, that is what depression is about. Maybe not to everyone, but it plays its part. She lets you into her mind to see why she's doing what she does. Anyone who is depressed should read it so they can explain to all the people that aren't what it is like. Everyone who has had the fortune to avoid it should read this book in order to realise what all these snivelling brats are going on about.
"Rock bottom is everything out of focus. It's a failure of vision, a failure to see the world as it is, to see the good in what it is, and only to wonder why the hell things look the way they do and not - and not some other way. As if there were any way that might look right from behind that depressive fog."
This book is one of my favourites mainly because of its resonance with so many periods / areas of my life. But it's also beautifully written with humour, exitement and interest.
