Ayia Napa - Fanstasy Island?

Summer's a long, long way ahead..But for some it isn't.The Cypriot town of Ayia Napa seems to be the haven in which punters/ravers or clubbers that love the 2-Step and Uk Underground Garage sound will be heading for this Summer...

As predicted Garage, Deep House, Soulful House and 2-Step Garage music has grown bigger and bigger here in England and around the Europe in general. And will continue to do so.

The party town of Ayia Napa, Cyprus that catered for UK Garage sound, and really did take off in the Summer of 1999. Incidently, there's a 8 week series on the life and times of what went on this summer showing the antics clubbers ( and what they got up to), the music that was played there and then finally interviews of the club owners, the promoters and some of the people that actually live there! For those of you in England, its shown on Friday evenings on Channel 4- 11.10pm.

This programme alone has made Ayia Napa, Cyprus one of the most sort after destination after Ibiza at the moment. Its almost booked up. And its not even the end of February 2000 yet.

However, not all is "sweetness and light"...A few people that have seen the programe over here are objecting to the antics of the clubbers that went over to Ayia Napa in 1999......Read on

Dear Sir,

Channel 4 in the UK is presently broadcasting a series (Of 7) programs under the title of Ayia Napa - Fantasy Island. It is viewed by thousands if not millions , across the land.

As a Cypriot who loves his heritage and Cypriot Culture, our family and friends have been appalled to what is taking place in this once most beautiful part of the island. The slow disintertgration of our Cypriot Culture has left us stunned and angry that Cyprus is allowed itself to slide to such lowiest ranks of permissible hedonism in pursue of Tourist currency.

The broadcasting of such programs not only make us feel appalled and embarrassed but also ashamed that our Government allows such behavior by irresponsible tourists to take place in our country. These tourists do not behave in a similar manner in their own country, only because their government and authorities do not permit such degenerated behavior.

Why in Cyprus? Is our own Country less respectable that their own? Its utter shame on all Cypriots who do not object to such behavior especially the media. Who tolerate and do not publicly speakout in protest. A nation that does not respect and preserve its cultural past, ultimately has no future....sadly, Cyprus is becoming a nation that possibly may not have a future by allowing corruption to root itself in such places such as Ayia Napa, which fuels the drug scene and foreign underworld figures who collude with Cypriot businessmen for the mere sake of profit at any cost.

Its high time that we put Cyprus first rather than allow our nation to destroy its culture for tourism, so synonymous with Third World Countries and Banana Republics."
