Greg Cuoco, New York City, Usa - The Official Interview
Greg Cuoco The Interview
Name: Greg Cuoco
Address/location:
Manhattan/New York/Usa
AGE:28
Who was, or what was your earliest influence into the world of music? Was it while attending church services as a young lad, the gospel influnce?
Or was it an artist such as James Brown, Marvin Gaye, etc that got you hooked into the music; Or was it that you were made to play a musical instrument as youngster such as the guitar or piano
Or was it listening to your mother or father going on about a particular artists that they liked that changed your views and made your curious about music in general?
My earliest influence would have to be my grandfather. He was an accordian player and also organist, he used to perform in Vaudville
and in many places in NYC in his early days. I was always amazed how he never had to read any music and could just start to play dozens of songs and sing as well! This gave me an early appreciation of music.
As I got older I was exposed to many artists, especially the early rock and roll artists of the 1950's.
What changed your views on wanting to become a dj?
Was it Hiphop music in general? Watching a particular dj hold a crowd in check with his sounds,Or was it the starability aspect of wanting to become a dj.( lets face it the dj's of today have the same pulling power that the guitar heores of the 1970's had like JEFF BECK, ERIC CLAPTON, STEVE HOWE and JIMI hendrix).
I started to DJ in college, I always loved music and I thought it would be fun to be on the radio, I started to play records and I just loved it! When I got back to NYC in the downtown area I started to be influenced by the "street" and got into dance music.
Where did you first perform as a dj?/ or musical artist?
At a school party?
Local nightclub
Relatives birthday party?
A radio station/legal or otherwise?
Well, first I started in college as a dj on the radio, and then I got back into it in SoHo in Manhattan,Ne York, Usa djing at a place called "The Construction Zone"
Where have you perform since those days. Tell about how you came about to where you are today?
Eventually, I started to DJ at more places in NYC, and moved on to some very underground clubs playing to the deep "garage" crowd. Then I got the chance to start a party as a room at a larger party called House Nation. It was an afterhours illegal party and was very underground. My room was called "Aqua-booty!" and we had that crowd movin! We moved the party to its own night and Aqua-booty! was born! Since then we have been going strong for 21/2 years with parties in other countries as well as the one here in NYC. I also started to DJ in the UK and Italy at clubs such as Ministry of Sound, Back to Basics and Echos.
What led you into the unchartered waters off working for or at the record label business? In fact who were your first record label that you worked for?
I first started with a label here in NYC called Vinylla records and I got started because a friend of a friend just started the label and needed help. I guess I just needed to find out what I wanted to do, and once I started I just kept going.
Have you worked aboard concerning ... (please tell us where?) Djing for instance, or working under the title of working for a record label.
I have worked as a DJ at lots of clubs in the UK, such as Ministry of Sound, Back to Basics and at Echos and the Prince club in Italy..
Is there a favourite place within the world that you like playing to concerning youself, or the company that you represent ( Usa, Europe or ASIA )
New York is still the best when it is good, but Back to Basics in Leeds, England and Sir Henry's in Cork, Ireland as well as Echos in Rimini, Italy are great! .
In your opinion is New York the Home of House, and New Jersey the Home of Garage; or is this a false statement to make at the moment. Is there any truth about the rumours flying around that this is so regarding Englands music critcs of the music of it .
I think that putting tags like that is just ridiculous, there are many fine people making great house, garage or whatever all over
What do you think of the music coming out of England that is labelled Garage/House by the music press at the moment. Do you think that we still have a lot to learn? Or are we ( artists ) not that far from you (the USA) in production terms?
I have heard many really good records done by English producers and I think they are as good as any made over here.
Who at the moment impresses you when it comes to making Soulful Garage and Funky House tunes- Masters of Work TEAM, Smack Production team, Blaze, Larry Heard, Maurice Joshua,Victor Simmonelli, Brooker T......WHO?
All those mentioned are impressive... those who do stand out are MAW, 95 North, Victor Simonelli, Jazz-N-Groove, also Grant Nelson.
What type of GARAGE/house music do you prefer yourself...Jazz House, Disco House, Deep House, Soulful Garage
All of the above
Is Tony Humpheries still the king in regards to this music, or has artists such as BLAZE and Smack been critically overlooked in the past via him?
Since I DJ with Tony at Aqua-booty! I would have to say he is king! But, as I am sure he would agree, there are many talents out there and everyone together makes up the whole of the house scene.
Is there a up and comming dj/production team artists that we should keep an eye for in the future? either in the USA, or in Europe that you have seen on (your travels)
Yes....watch out for 95 North -Washington.D.C, Usa
Do you think that the attitudes of the American public will change towards House music in general. Or do you think there will always be a negative attitude concerning the music.....
I am not sure about this... I don't think it is negative it just needs more exposure, and I think this will happen slowly...
That concludes this round of interview with Greg Cuoco, watch this space for the next round of International dj's
