Dj Dazy - Portland, Usa The Official Interview

Dj Dazy
Portland,Oregan, USA

Name: Dj Dazy
Age..23 years old
Occupation..Dj/Administration Assistant
Where Born ..Originally from Bangkok, Thailand

Earliest musical Influences?

1. Was through being brought up in a musical family?

Was it through having or being forced to learn to learn a musical instrument?

Was it through listening to your mother and fathers records, or discussions as to who they liked?

Dazy: My family is and always has been musical.
My father is a big time guitar player, who likes Elivs and the such.

The American Rock and Roll sound is what he likes. He also manages to play a little drums as well.
Both him and my mother used to sing together at nightclubs.
It wasn't their profession or anything, they just enjoyed peforming.

When I was a child my mother used to take me to a lot of concerts.
People like Tom Jomes and the Bee Gee's.
Peaches and Herb was another concert that I remember.
At the time I thought it was great. Even if now I really don't care for tht style of music the "live"" aspect of it is something I will always remember.

Who was your musical idols as a child/ Teenager?
1. Was it James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Stanley Clarke
2. The Commodores, Earth, Wind and Fire, Fleetwood Mac, etc
The Sound of Philadephia, Stax, Motown, or the Hiphop influence or certain Rock music influences?

Dazy: Donna Summer was alawys someone I always used to sing along to.
I would put on her albums and be a back up singer to the star herself.
Later on other women performers arose that I took note of, people like Madonna and Sade
All of their early stuff found its way onto my Walkman and into my 12 year old ears

How did you get into the World of Djing?
Was it through taking part in school party
Djing at a relatives party
Or at a local youth club in your area?

Dazy: I have always danced.
I used to be a dancer and I suppose I still am, but then it was Jazz and Ballet

I was 19 and living in Salt Lake City, Utah, Usa when the first Techno club opened up. I went in and my feet started moving. I met a lot of friends there who wanted to do something more than dance. We wanted to be DJ's ourseleves and throw our own parties and events.
I mail ordered a pair of Technics 1200 and got myself a mixeer and away I went.

After this starting point where did you take your next line of advancement in the world of djing Gained employment working at a club djing.Or did you enter the music world through other avenues? How did the your proression as a Dj/producer come about?

Dazy: I did not feel like Salt Lake City had what I wanted in the music scene so I left.
I moved to the West Coast, to the state called Oregan in a city named Portland I was very persistent to play when I first arrived.

I talked to everyone I met who was somehow involved with the "Portland scene", and even threw Portland's first all Female Dj party so people would get to know me as a DJ.
Eventually it just stuck into the promoters and dancers heads that I had the skills and I should be hired. The phone started ringing, and I started playing around the city more.

First it was mostly one-off events, .... raves and such.
Now I've found that more and more people are booking me for underground club atmospheres, where my music seems to fit well.

That's not too say I don't still play and still love rave events. As times go forward, your style gets more unique and more people hear you,....out of town promoters start to call.
Now I have the privilage of playing up and down the West Coast, Denver, Detroit, Minneapolis, and various parts within Canada. I'm just glad people seem to like what I choose to play

Has the success of within the style of music surprised you?

Dazy: It has not surprised me at all.
Electronic based music can be very catchy to the ear, and of course to the dancing feet.
With more people getting involved in making electronic based music the costs of equipment to do so go down, with the amount of DJ's going up there are more people for the record companies to sell to.

And with the surplus of said producers and DJ's all making different kinds of musics, it gives dancers and groovers more styles of music to gog out and hear.
Its all about money, anything that has money making potential will be increased by all, until it crumbles.

Do you like the playing of Deep House ( Jazz fusion/style of House music, but with mellow, melodic overtones) instrumentals

Dazy: I don't really think that Deep House is just Jazz Fusion .
I think it is about a certain feeling to the music more so than particular instruments
I feel that pretty much all I play is Deep House music.
I do enjoy some Jazz aspects in some off my tracks, more the particulary horn sections

Or do you prefer the playing of Vocal style House cuts instead favoured by New Jersey Groups such as Blaze, Smack. David Camacho, etc..... It seems as if New York, these days prefers to make instrumental tacks,
whilst New Jersey prefers Vocal tracks
Am I right, or am I talking nonsene?

Dazy: I like instrumentals tracks over vocals.
I really hate whiny women diva voices and male vocals
They just don't do anything for me.
If a track comes along and it has clear crisp soulful female lyrics, I'll play it....
But those are rare.
Artists like Barbara Tucker and some of the stuff that has come of the label Federal Hill are vocal tracks that I would throw into my set.

Getting back to the other question.
I have never been to either place before and feel I would have too comment on something like that.

What do you think of the scene within Europe?
Is it encouraging, or have we still a lot to learn from the Americans?
This includes djs .....as well as producers

Dazy: When I first started playing records 3 or 4 years ago I played a lot of
Progressive House and Trance Music
So I used to buy a lot of imports.
Now I really only play House music, so I find myself buying a lot more domestic USA records.
The US has really improved over this last year as far as the quality of the music is concerned.
The Uk as a whole seems to be putting out a bunch of Handbag, Bangy vocal tracks
That's not to say I haven't bought any imports at all, you can always find a diamond in the ruff!

What is the scene like in America.
Is House music becomming more acceptable, that within the past was being over washed by the countries fascination with Hiphop, Swing and Rock music(Answer this question to relevance to your own country if it applies!)

Dazy: House music is not the most accepted form of electronic music here in the USA
By far what most groovers listen to is that
Progressive, banging breakbeat sound full of big massive build ups and things.

The whole concept of raving or parties has been a bit more embraced but only being pushed by the hands of money.

I suppose the key to this whole answer is that I don't really understand the phrasing or purpose of this question.

Who do rate within the vein of this music?
Masters of Work, Tony Humpheries, Blaze,
95 North, Frankie Knuckles, Victor Simmonelli, Norman Jay, MK

Dazy: Masters at Work are alright.
Mateo and Matos are solid producers who released a couple of things off
Henry Street Records, New York City, USA
Todd Terry has been making good music for years.
DJ Duke, Dirty Harry, Chez Damier and the whole Perscription crew
have all made records that are in my crate.

Who do you rate as one for the future? Who should we keep an eye on?
Europe or the USA -Dj or House music diva?

Dazy: Diz, who I have previously mentioned.
He is out of Chicago and just released a record off a
Perscription records offshoot label called Balance records
I've heard him a couple of times, and he has an incredible understanding of just how powerful
real House can be when its played right.
His record selection is good as well.
He is one who might make it to an international level... at some point.

When are you considering playing in Europe? ( Or are you going to do so )

Dazy: I hope to play in Europe next year!

What do you think about other countries involvement into the music such as France and Germany?

Dazy: I think its great for the scene.

That's it. Thanks for taking part in this Interview!

Hugs and Kisses .. Carl.
