"Carl's Garage and House Website"

Nick Karbay - Ipswich, Suffolk - Official Interview

NZK
Ipswich, Suffolk
England

Past projects

"Too many to mention. I started out in 1985, by blagging myself into a gig at the local civil service club. The place was full of ELVIS fans. It was my first, almost my last gig".

What influenced you into becoming a Dj? Was it a particular person/s ( group, artist/s or solo performers, or even djs'? ),a particular sound that you have always liked ( Motown, Prelude, Westend, T.S.O.F.P -the sound of Philadelphia, HipHop beats, Swing beat or even Ska and Reggae sounds)?

Or was it to make your self noticed ? Lets face it everybody but their Grand ma's have aspirations of becoming one? Was it this "STARABILITY" quality that Djs have nowadays - similar to the Guitar heroes of the 1970s ( Gary Moore, Jeff Beck and Steve Howe), that everybody wants to become one?

Or failing that was it a combination of all three?

"I loved dance music and was into collecting records so I thought why not share them with others".

What do you consider to play when situated all alone up there on the decks? Dark Garage? (Dubs, Deep, Deep Jazz/funk variation of House ). Or Vocal Garage? ( New Jersey style Garage - lots of vocals - happy vibes style of house - Uplifting House - Michael Watford, Arnold Jarvis, etc ). Or do you play other forms of music as well within your sets, like HipHop, Swing and Soul. Do you try to intersperse all three during playing to the masses?

"Garage, House, Soul, Funk, Jazz, Swing, Rap, Ragga, Jungle and even a bit of Techno and Trance".

What are your thoughts on the scene of Garage House? Is the scene growing or receding in your opinion? Is it still considered by the general clubber as being too Girlie?

"Its growing because many of the "Bandwagon Jumpers" are leaving the Jungle and Hardcore scene to play Bumpy "Cut and Paste" style grooves labelling them "Garage". A term with which I take a issue".

While I applaude them for playing the music, I have to wonder at their motivation for doing so. These are the people who won't play vocals as they are considered too "Girlie". Also more positively, older clubbers (Mid 20 upwards) generally find Hardcore\Jungle\Techno as being too abrasive whereas Garage is nearer to the Club sounds of the Mid 1980's

Has the Jungle movement harmed the Garage scene within England, or has it helped it too redirect its self by producing even better tunes to complete against it ?

No because it has taken the Media hype away from the Garage House scene and with it the trendies, allowing the scene to keep its credibiltly.

Have you worked with any of the majors players within the world of Garage House; and if so who?

"Not as yet".

Have you learnt anything from them - Tips on improving your Dj styles.

"As above".

What annoys you when working in the realm as a Dj. Know it all Punters? Being harassed all the time when in the midst of a brilliant mix? Or not being able to chat to any of the females going past your booth?(Mention any other problems that you'd like to get of your chest )

"Being harassed when mixing. Not having enough time getting to know the female punters whowhizz past my booth and BAD MIXING".

What do you think of the Uk Garage House artists? Do you think they have a long way to go in comparison to their US counterparts? Are the UK Garage labels improving in your opinion, or are the US labels still miles ahead?

"At their best the UK Garage/House artists as good as the Americans, but their isn't enough quality in depth. This will right its self in time as long as our labels/artists are encouraged".

Is there a club you've visited thats has left a lasting impression on you? Or maybe there is one that you would still would like to visit? The Hard Times(Leeds-England), UK Club Midlands(Wolverhampton-England) or the Tunnel club(Glasgow-Scotland) for instance?

"I hardly ever get the chance to go out as I'm always working".

Have you any plans of visiting the USA in the near future for a well earned rest and a bit of record buying? Maybe not even the states, what about RIMINI, in ITALY (supposedly to be wicked there for the Garage scene!) ?

"Not at present, time won't allow".

Have you any advice to aspiring Djs?

"Always put your audience first. Watch them!

What is your ideal crowd to play for?

"A twenty something "UP FOR IT", open minded crowd".

What do you think of the Hard drugs that is sweeping the clubs of today? Is it now part of life? Or is it a trend, a fashion to take them. What are your opinions on this subject?

"While I am straight myself, I know people who take " Class A " Drugs. I will not judge people because of this. I have given up trying to moralise with them. I don't think its relevant to say people "You can't do that". Now its more the case of "If your going to, these are the precautions you should take". Like it or not its now a part of life, but it would be unfair to state the dance scene because of it as there are a surprising amount of drug free clubbers out there!
