Mark"E"C- Klass Pirate Radio - Official Interview

Klass Fm, Essex, England

15.If you had a Club that was yours to do with what you will.. What would be you music policy within the the spectrum of House music...?? This co-inside reports that London is to expected to have built 4 New Night Clubs to built within the City...??

That's difficult as there are so many quality nights around, obviously a new venue would attract new people providing the line up was good. We have done club nights with the emphasis on the DJ's from the station, rather than the special guests and they have proved to be a massive success. The music policy was House/Garage with each DJ spinning his particular style. 16 If you were given the chance as a DJ would you like to work with in the World of House and Garage music? Masters at Work, Tuff and Jam, M.J Cole, Kerri Chandler, Grant Nelson, Mood 2 SWING, Mousse T..who??

Definitely MJ Cole, the man has so much talent when it comes to producing a unique sound and is hugely responsible for the course that the music has recently taken. Also Grant Nelson and Tuff Jam would be good as they are extremely consistent when it comes to producing quality material.

10.Who do you rate as a DJ to look out for in the future? Who should we keep an eye out for! From your own country? DJ/ music artist/s producer

Definitely Klass FM's very own DJ Miley, who is now playing regular sets at a few venues around Essex and London. Also DJ Roo has got a very tight style with a good ear for the music as his increasing work load obviously reflects.

11. Are you at peace with the press?

Yes we never had any dealings with the Press, but then again we remain professional whilst on air. Do you still constantly worry about being misquoted. Not really applicable. Or do you have a good relationship with the press as a whole? Again not very applicable 12. The very mention of UK Underground House brings about mummerings of "Here we come again", or "More please". It has led to some hefty and heated conversations/exchanges on the "World famous Global House-mail forum in the past. Many have seen UK Underground House (* Speed Garage ) as a breath of fresh air, others however are claiming it to be pile of "Doo Do"...What are you thought's about it?

Everyones entitled to their own opinions, although I do see it as a positive step for the UK scene. We are proving once again with our own twist on the Garage sound that we are definitely and consistently up there with the big boys, as we have with our own invention of Drum and Bass.

Who Listening?

15.Changing the subject again..Are you running a label of anykind? And if so, who have you got signed to the label? Any important Releases that we should keep a look out for?

We haven't got a far as sorting the label out!! I am currently in the Studio with Miley working on a few bits and pieces that will be sure to see the light of day soon enough. Hold tight for the first release. 16.Are you in charge of a Record Shop?

No. 16a It seems as if New York via its records labels are hitting back of late which have definitely caught eye of the Soulful Head buyers in England and Europe..Have you noticed this....Has this been mentioned within your record buying colleagues of friend that you know...Already Spiritual Life, Ibadan and Wave Records are starting to become cult status over here...Is it a case of "The Empire Strikes Back!!!

I think its more of a case that they maybe been over shadowed by the marketing hype and buzz around the UK scene over the last year. This is now fading away slowly due to the media getting their teeth into "the next big thing" such as the fuss with French House over the summer months. All this in turn has enabled the Americans to get back into the scene and once again gain recognition for their talents after not being flavour of the month if you like.

New York, New York..So Good they named it twice!!

18. As labels go..Have you a favourite One that you always stop by as you flick through the piles of Records in your specialist record shop?

Anything on Todd Edwards label I Records, also Prolific, 500 Rekords, Public Demand and more recently Cut n' Play have been churning out some quality releases lately. 19.Record mixing. Your technique when playing out, does it differ to when you are on the station?

Do you use a style of blending when you playing out; or are you a person who like to jump straight in and out of a track without warning!!! What styles do you like to use when playing out or on air?

Styles obviously vary due to the radio as sometimes the phones are going so mental with shouts etc that you just haven't the time to mix sometimes. When it comes to playing out it allows you to get into the mix of which I tend to chop and blend the tracks, relying heavily on beat matching and letting each track roll.

Technique?

20.When you are out are you governed to what you must play? Do promoters dictate what you must and must play on your DJ sets?

No not really as I do tend to lean heavily to the UK underground so people will book you on the assumption that you are going to play an Underground set. Saying that I wouldn't mind maybe an Old Skool Hardcore set at something like Raindance as the energy and the vibe at events like that are definitely superior to the Im just gonna stand here and look good attitude of a lot of UK Garage events, something which I don't really like about the scene as I myself like to dance all night and get into the music.

Conducting the music to masses?

21. As we enter the year 2000. Is it still hard for women world wide to make it to a good level in the world of House and Garage music as a DJ? For Instance have you got any Women DJ's on your station. Britain that I know of has 2 that just comes to mind here that seem to be respected all over the country and most parts of Europe. Smokin Joe and Sarah HB.

We haven't had any women DJ's on the station as of yet but I feel that at our level that a lot of them are maybe a bit intimidated by the Male dominance of Pirate stations. We have had a Women MC on the Station which definitely provided a fresh input into the sets. I myself would like to see more women break into the scene. Donna Dee is doing it for the Underground scene at the moment with consistently good releases although I haven't heard her play live.

22.Its getting nearer to Christmas now, and its that time of year when promoters have already, or are looking to book their star line ups for their Christmas and New Year bashes..Are you part of any star line booking either in the States or in Europe for this year? Or is it "Feet up for you, and enjoy the Holiday? (*Reputedly some DJ's in the past have been paid in excess of 20,000 pounds or more to play Christmas, or New Year Bashes.. Is this right, or could this harm the music in the long run...what are your views on this?)

I haven't got any bookings so far although a few of the DJ's from the Station are already booked to appear, for example you can catch Miley up at 12 O Clock at Harmony, Hollywoods Ipswich New Years Eve along side an all star line up. I will probably end up on the other side of the decks this NYE seeing in the New Year on the Danceable. As for extortionate fee's for DJ's, I don't see that the DJ's are doing anything wrong as its basically competition on the promoters part that allow them to command such High Fees, at the end of the day if the promoters are prepared to pay it to ensure they get what they think is the best line up then so be it.

23.Talking about putting one's foot up. When you do get the chance to do so. Do you ever read the any of of the favoured Dance Magazines such as DJ, Wax, Mixmag, Echoes, etc, etc? And if so which one and why this particular one? I do tend to read DJ and Mixmag from time to time, although its mainly for the interviews and club guides as the new tunes and review sections tend to be a bit behind the Underground scene.

24 Have you got any advice for any aspiring record label producer, DJ or club owner within the world of House and Garage. Any rules that he should adhere to!!!

Just to basically believe in yourself and your own talent as the scene itself is a tuff nut to crack. Once you have that illusive first break, be it your first tune, club night or DJ set believe me it becomes easier.

If you have any more additional points that you would like to add then please do so!!

Just really like to say thanks to all the DJ's and listeners that have helped make Klass FM a success. Shouts to Miley, Technician and Outlaw for all the hard work that you guys put into it. Massive respect to all the DJ's on Klass and all the UK Underground Crews who make and have made this scene what it is today, you know who you are!!!
