SPEED
GARAGE PAGE - What is Speed Garage Music?
|
|
Many who have seen the
scene grow from a few hundred punters in a small venue,
to now being the biggest music attraction since
"Jungle", who wince at the term
"Speed Garage". ( of which it is now
known as!!!!) Dominic Spreadlove, (Has no quarms
as to how "Speed Garage" came into exsitence).
Formally of the The SPREADLOVE PROJECT Events, at the
night Gass Club nightclub, in London. It ran for 3 years,
and was co promoted by Andy Swallow and himself, who is
now the owner of Public Demand records, Uk

|
| "When we
started in 1993, the scene was still very much underground
and we were playing a mixture of Deep house and Soulful
US Garage. At this point in time most of the music played
was either US or Italian House and Garage music, with a
little from the UK. In my opinion, the sound we now call
Speed Garage evolved in the following way". |
"Myself, Hermit and
Daryl B who were the residents each week were playing
track at +6 and upwards to pick up the dancefloor".
We were also tending to play more of a dubby sound with
maybe a few vocal hooks instead of a full vox.. It was
towards the end of the 3 years at the Gass club, it was
then that the 2 Step Garage sound started to rear its
ugly head.

|
"Jokingly,
a few of my peers and colleuges
have said that I was partly responsable for the way the
sound changed because I used to play a lot of old tracks
from the hardcore days. One track
in particular was played by me every single week was "We
are IE" by Lennie D Ice. This was the Spreadlove
anthem, and I still drop it today when I play Old School
Garage sets (Work that One out???). I do like to feel
that this may have had a certain influence on the way
things went as I did notice a few other jocks start to
dig it out such Karl "tuff" Brown, London, England.
Maybe this is were the basslines came from?"

|
"During
our first year we had a lot of Djs from other scenes coming
down each week like Frankie Foncette and Ricky Morrison.
We also had the likes of Victor Simmonelli and Lennie
Fontana and Dj Disciple come to play for us too.The Godfather,
Mr.Todd Terry, was also a regular for a while and it was
he who I feel origionally coined the phrase "Speed
Garage".
