John Perry Society Day
On Thursday, June 2nd. 2011, the members of the Society played for the John Perry Trophy before having lunch together in the clubhouse as has become the routine. This year because we were all ready early, including Jim Vine, we had our very brief A.G.M. and the prize giving before starting our meal.
The AGM part was started and finished in two minutes. A few weeks ago it was decided on one Thursday by those present that our handicaps should be changed back to "Club Handicaps" + 2 at the beginning of the summer season in line with the end of "winter rules". This was put into operation. It was also suggested and agreed that the same adjustments should be made as the "winter rules " come into effect in the autumn.
There were no objections to the cause of action which had already been taken so this can be minuted as accepted.
The AGM was closed in two minutes flat.
The winner of the Trophy this fifth year was Brian Hartnett who scored 35 points off his 16 handicap. This win came on countback from Dennis Charlton (13 h/c) and Lance Molyneux (13 h/c). At the request of John's son David the trophy was presented by Bernard Ballard, a two times winner of this prize, who had joined the players for lunch. Bernard has been through hip surgery and out of action for several weeks so it was good to see him around again.
As usual Front and Back 9 prizes of a share of the entry fees were awarded as well. Lance Molyneux winining the Front 9 with 21 points and Jim Vine, the Back 9 with 17 points on countback from Joe Ronan, Robert Norse, John Sherrington and David Wallbank. The success of these prize wininers was also endorsed by Beryl and David who presented them with sleeves of golf balls.
Brian Hartnett, as winner, thanked David and his mother who was not able to attend this year, for their generousity and asked that we all raise our glasses in memory of a dear man, John, who was no longer with us." |

John Perry Society Day
On Thursday, June 10th, 19 of the Society?s' members played for the John Perry Trophy before having lunch together in the club house and then a quick meeting (AGM ?) to decide some rule changes for this coming year.
The winner of the Trophy this year was Mike Smith who scored 33 points playing off his 9 handicap. John's widow, Beryl presented Mike with the trophy and her personal prize of 3 sleeves of golf balls. Mike also won the usual overall prize for the day. An extra prize of 3 golf balls was won by George Gordon who came in second in the overall scoring.
As usual Front and Back Nine prizes of a share of the entry fees were won by Jim Vine's 16 points on the Front 9 and by Joe Ronan's 18 points on the Back 9.
The day's winner, Mike Smith, thanked Mrs Perry for her generosity and his playing partners for what had been a very pleasant mornings golf.
After this the meeting commenced; everyone had had the chance to read a summary of various changes that had been put forward over the last several weeks.
After some discussion on Handicap Categories. It was proposed that all categories should have .5 added back onto their handicaps if outside their buffer zones. It was decided to stay with the current CONGU system of .1 as the proposals for changing the Society Handicaps would go towards levelling the playing field.
Competition Scratch Score has been a bone of contention recently as a few very poor scores could result in lowering the CSS which meant that several players were frequently getting h/c cuts without winning prizes. This has been the case since 22.10.09 when we changed the calculation of the C.S.S from the average of the top third of the field to the average of the entire field. It was proposed that we reverted to the original Top Third but it was pointed out that this method had not been to everyone?s liking, thus the October change. It was decided to stay with the current 100% calculation.
Reference Society Handicaps, it had been suggested that all handicaps should revert to current Club Handicaps as of our next game. It was also suggested that these club handicaps should be reduced by a further 2 as we play all our competitions off yellow tees. A further proposal was put forward that the reduction should be limited to 1 shot for category 1 & 2 players and to 2 for category 3 & 4 players. It was also proposed that this change to Club Handicaps should be done annually. It was noted that our Society membership included a few players that did not have "Active" handicaps. It was suggested that these players should have a further 2 strokes removed from their new adjusted handicap until such times as their "Inactive club h/c" does become active at which time their Society H/C will be adjusted
All these proposals were accepted meaning that next Thursday all members will be playing off the new Society Handicap. The new handicaps are on this 10/06/2010 HANDICAP LIST.
Another suggestion put forward was that some "deserving" members should be allowed to play off the blue tees. An age and handicap has been suggested at 75 years of age and 18+ handicaps.. This was agreed by those present.
More than one Society Member has queried our starting times on a Thursday.
.
To clarify the procedure may we follow the following set of rules?
1) Be on the 1st tee by 7.20. a.m.
2) If there is a large number then a set of players can be sent off before 7.30 to make sure that everyone is away before 8.0 o'clock. The 1st group should always include the marker for the day.
3) At 7.30 draw the balls for starting order and get away as soon as possible in 3s or 4s depending on numbers.
4) Late comers who might still be in the car park should be taken into account when sending out the different sized groups but a ball cannot be put into the bag until they are actually on the tee and ready to play
5) If circumstances allow, one group can be sent off the 3rd, preferably a 3 ball.
Most times we get everyone away with no problems but if we follow these rules it should prevent the odd hiccup.

John Perry Society Day
On June the 4th.the gentlemen of The John Perry Golf Society played in the third annual competition for the John Perry Trophy.
Some very good scores were recorded and the results were not known until the very end. Charlie O'Brien, an early finisher, came in with 43 points and felt quietly confident that he was on his way to winning. Then one of the last players in returned the same 43 points, however it was Charlie who won on count-back from Mike Smith.
The front 9 winner was Mike Smith, he scored 23 on this half of his game. The Back 9 went to Dave Almond with his 21 points.
Mrs Beryl Perry presented the Trophy to Charlie O'Brien on behalf of her son David and herself. Charlie used his acceptance speech to say how much our friend John was missed and the happy memories that he had of John whilst he , Charlie , was Club Captain along with Beryl Perry as Lady Captain in 1995. Charlie also thanked those that had organised the day and the staff who had prepared and served our meal.
Last years winner was Bernard Ballard with 38 points which he scored defending his win of the inaugural competition when he had also scored 38 points. This year Bernard repeated himself yet again by scoring the same 38 points but this time it only put him in 4th place behind the named winners and the trophy was passed over to another worthy winner, Charlie O'Brien.
After the very enjoyable meal a brief A.G.M. was held to decide on our future handicapping system. It was proposed by Colin Williamson that winners of weekly competitions should automatically be cut by three shots and the front and back winners by two. This was backed by Jim Vine and others with the possibility of the cuts being two and one. It was explained by Bill Gowers, who had supplied the Handicap Master program, that this could be done but that it would have to be adjusted manually after each competition. After some further discussion it was proposed by Barry Hurst that the matter should be decided by a show of hands. This was accepted and the resulting count was 13 in favour of continuing on the existing system and 10 in favour of introducing the cut in handicaps. The Continue Vote won the day
Members should note that all past results and winners are on the web-site for pre-computer days and since starting to use the present system. Over the years there have been players hitting a winning streak but nearly everybody has featured, admittedly some more than others but next season the dice may fall in your direction. It might not seem fair but when someone is cut without winning it does give the other members a good laugh |

The John Perry Trophy
At Channels Golf Club on Thursday May 10th members of the John Perry Society played in their regular Thursday Morning Swindle but this time it was rather special as they were playing for a trophy put up by Mrs Beryl Perry, John's widow, and his son David. John Perry had run the Thursday Society for many years until he was taken from this life a few months ago. The change of name was brought about so that his name would be carried forward although none of the existing members would need reminding of this gentleman who was so respected by everyone he came in contact with.
The competition, played off the yellow tees over the Channels main course, provided three chances of winning. The result being that Tom Thake won the Front 9 with 22 points. The Back 9 went between three players, Bernard Ballard, Bill Gowers and Barry Hurst who all returned 21 points.
The winner with a total of 38 points was Bernard Ballard. It was rather apt that Bernard did win this inaugural game for the trophy because he had been a friend of John Perry for many years before golf became a feature of their lives. |
