Technites was
asked to update the office computer for a small business of 10 users.
The existing infrastructure was a simple peered arrangement, with a
wide range of operating systems on the desktop with no central server
or reliable back up process. As with many SMEs with a limited budget,
the client wished to reuse as much of the existing hardware and
software as possible. Another consideration was to minimise changes to
current working practices and to make the changes during a weekday but
without major disruption - especially to email communications.
Together with one of its partners who supplied the networking ,
Technites was quickly able to specify a solution. Some different
options in choice of hardware and financing were put forward which
enabled the client to make an informed choice.
The aim was to keep the best of the old and to upgrade only where there
was clear business advantage. The main decision was to get a Windows
2003 server so as to ensure future growth capability and security. It
was also decided to combine the existing two mail systems (for internal
and external) into one using VPOP as the mail server as opposed to the
much more expensive and complex Microsoft product. A automated nightly
back up system was also introduced.
Over a day and a half the new network was up and running with all the
desktops now connected to the new server. All the old data was
transferred to the new server and users were only inconvenienced for a
very short period of time during the cut over. Similarly the new email
system was set up and the users individual email all copied over and
new accounts set up.
On Technites recommendation, laptops were used to replace older
desktops which gave those users the ability to work away from the
office when required.
Where ever feasible the older desktops were given a clean up and new
lease of life.
For the client the main benefits of using Technites was that we
understood their requirements as were able to recommend and implement
solution in keeping with their business objective and budget and work
practices. The result was a seamless transfer with improved working.
