Going right back to my roots... When Grant Pringle (fine caricaturist
and former member of Dawn of the Replicants... they've recently reformed
without him - rock and, if you will, roll) at 'Sun Zoom Spark' commissioned
me to illustrate the Beefheart article it not only summoned up the psychedelic
posters of the late sixties which turned me on to doing my own art, but
also reminded me that the first ever painting in oils I did was a head and
shoulders of the good Captain (wearing green topper, of course) at the head
of a queue consisting of Batman, Antennae Jimmy Semens (in bath cap) and
several score others. It was nice to incorporate the brown trout (because
it was actually a carp's head on the cover of the Trout Mask Replica
album as any fuel kno) with Don Van Vliet's other career as abstract
painter. I wonder how the old codger is getting on in the Mojave Desert:
a genius and no exaggeration (but probably difficult to live with). Here's
a quick look at that very early painting (from a very old and rather poor
photograph):
